[email protected] X F s I s a F I l e s y s t e m t h at w a s d e signed from day one for computer systems with large numbers of CPUs and large disk arrays. It focuses on supporting large files and good streaming I/O performance. It also has some interesting administrative features not supported by other Linux file systems. This article gives some background information on why XFS was created and how it differs from the familiar Linux file systems. You may discover that XFS is just what your project needs instead of making do with the default Linux file system.

Porting the SGI XFS File System to Linux
In late 1994, SGI released an advanced, journaled file system called XFS on IRIX, their System-V-derived version of UNIX. Since that time, XFS has proven itself in production as a fast, highly scalable file system suitable for computer systems ranging from the desktop to supercomputers. In early 1999, SGI announced that XFS would be released under an open source license and integrated into the ...

The object-based storage model, in which files are made up of one or more data objects stored on self-contained Object-Based Storage Devices (OSDs), is emerging as an architecture for distributed storage systems. The workload presented to the OSDs will be quite different from that of generalpurpose file systems, yet many distributed file systems employ general-purpose file systems as their unde...
متن کاملImplementing Journaling in a Linux Shared Disk File System
In computer systems today, speed and responsiveness is often determined by network and storage subsystem performance. Faster, more scalable networking interfaces like Fibre Channel and Gigabit Ethernet provide the scaffolding from which higher performance computer systems implementations may be constructed, but new thinking is required about how machines interact with network-enabled storage de...
متن کاملThe Full Path to Full-Path Indexing
Full-path indexing can improve I/O efficiency for workloads that operate on data organized using traditional, hierarchical directories, because data is placed on persistent storage in scan order. Prior results indicate, however, that renames in a local file system with fullpath indexing are prohibitively expensive. This paper shows how to use full-path indexing in a file system to realize fast ...
متن کاملOne Big File Is Not Enough: A Critical Evaluation of the Dominant Free-Space Sanitization Technique
Many of today’s privacy-preserving tools create a big file that fills up a hard drive or USB storage device in an effort to overwrite all of the “deleted files” that the media contain. But while this technique is widespread, it is largely unvalidated. We evaluate the effectiveness of the “big file technique” using sectorby-sector disk imaging on file systems running under Windows, Mac OS, Linux...
